Trattkantarell is a late species of mossy, usually nutrient-poor forest ground, but neither a rain total nor the first frost explains its fruiting at hillside scale.
Chanterelle is fussy about soil, light and company in ways that are legible in the terrain — which is why a hillside can tell you where to look.
